The Origin of Dildo

As per the Cambridge Dictionary Dildo is an object shaped like and used in place of a penis, for giving sexual pleasure.

While the exact origins of Dildo’s name are shrouded in mystery, the word was widely used in the 18th century to describe anything cylindrical (test tubes, corks, etc.). But the word’s origin dates as far back as the 1590s, when it was used as a bastardized form of Italian diletto meaning "delight". The name is unmistakably penetrating!

Another theory goes that dildo got its name from Dill-doll: an Old English term taken from the old Norse word ‘dilla’, a verb meaning ‘to soothe’. Literally then a dill-doll would be a soothing doll, or in this case an effigy of a member.

Some say that dildo came from Dil doul: a phrase that referred to a man’s penis as used in the 17 th century ballad “The Maids Complaint for want of a Dil Doul”

According to Wikipedia, the word dildo referred to a phallus-shaped peg used to lock an oar in position on a dory (small boat). It would be inserted into a hole on the side of the boat, and is very similar in shape to the modern day sex toy. There exists a town in the maritime province of Canada called Dildo, with Dildo Island located nearby – however if you ask any of the locals, they’ll likely tell you the name comes from the small boat peg and not a source of delight for women.

The first known dildo recovered by paleontologists dates to the Paleolithic era. Made of silt stone and polished to a high gloss, it was used for either religious ritual or personal pleasure.

The Greeks and Romans were polytheists who worshiped a variation of Dionysus, god of wine and fertility. Also called Bacchus or Liber, worship of the sex god included parades through the streets, where giant phalluses were raised up like protest signs. At the end of a marital fertility parade, a maiden would come forth and crown the religious phallus with a wreath of flowers.

Women in Ancient Greece enjoyed using olisbos, which were phallic shaped objects made of wood or leather. Back in those days, olive oil wasn’t just a staple of the Greek diet — it doubled as the best lube available. The Greeks believed that a lack of sperm caused "hysteria," or a wandering uterus, in women. Greek men who left home for long periods of time to fight in wars often gave their wives olisbos to prevent hysteria thought to be caused by the lack of sperm

There’s a funny story that Cleopatra invented the first vibrator. Rather than being carved from wood or rock, this one consisted of a gourd hollowed out and filled with angry bees.

The Chinese were also considered great innovators in female masturbation. Wealthy Chinese men who had many wives found a way to keep them all happy. They provided penis alternatives to keep these wives faithful and prevent them from resorting to lesbianism. Ancient Chinese dildos have been discovered that were cast of bronze and other metals. Some of these were hollow and allowed liquid to be released at the appropriate time.

In Persia, virgins were coveted. Blood from the hymen was thought to be unclean and best avoided by new husbands. Therefore, the local holy man would show up on the wedding night and use a large stone dildo to break the hymen. Sometimes this was done in the centre of town, either in celebration or to confirm the virginity of the bride

Other ancient texts from around the world, including the Arabian Nights, mention fruit, vegetables, and other penis-shaped objects being used for sexual stimulation and fulfillment.

With advent of the 20th century, dildos started to be manufactured from newer materials like rubber. And then came the amazing vibrator

Doctors began giving women ‘hands on’ orgasms. When the task became too time consuming, General Electric invented its fifth electrical home appliance. Yes, the vibrator was actually the fifth commercially available electric appliance, after the tea kettle, bread toaster, sewing machine and fan. These handy vibrators were designed to get those troublesome women un-hysterical, so doctors could go back to more important work.

The introduction of silicone was a great leap forward in the functionality of dildos used for sexual stimulation. Silicone is hypoallergenic, feels more like real skin than other non-porous materials, and does not degrade when used with water-based lubricant.

Today dildos are available in varied shapes, forms, tastes and variations. Some states have actually taken the time to pass laws restricting how many dildos a person can keep at home

Getting a dildo in India today is a lot easier than it used be. And you won’t have to carve it yourself.
